مهما اجتهدنا لاختزال محمد العلي في شكل ما، أو صورة ما فإننا لا نستطيع ذلك.

إنه اختصار لروح الكتابة الجديدة في المملكة، وهوائها، وأسئلتها، واصطدامها مع أقانيم الكتابة المحافظة، ولا أقول الكلاسيكية، فقد كان أحد نبلاء الاحتفاء بالتراث الثقافي القديم، لغة وشعراً ونثراً وتاريخاً.

كان يبدو لي، على الدوام، قابضاً على بشارات التجديد ولكن دون أن تتخلى يده عن الماضي العريق. دائماً يمضي بجناحين، ومن عرفه عن قرب يتذكر إمارات الدهشة التي تملأ جلساءه حين تنبعث جواهر القصائد والقصص والحكم والأمثال من بين طوايا حديثه الشفهي في اللقاءات الجانبية أو عبر السهرات الممتعة، ليصبح كائناً يتجلّى فيحملنا بين خيالاته ومفرداته إلى سماوات أخرى.

كانت ريادة محمد العلي الحداثية تنبع من هذا المفصل، وأقصد تقاطع البعد الكلاسيكي في كتابته مع الروح التجديدية محفوفة بالرؤية التنويرية في الحياة والمجتمع والثقافة والفن. ولهذا فإننا لا نقرأ نصوصه الأدبية في معزل عن أفكاره وتعليقاته التي تضمّنتها إسهاماته الصحفية التي لم تنقطع، وهي إسهامات انطلقت في صحيفة اليوم لعقود، ثم في صحف الشرق الأوسط، والشرق، وعكاظ، وفي مجلة اليمامة في سنواته الأخيرة، والتي ظل مواظباً عليها حتى الشهر الذي سبق وفاته.

يندر أن تجد ذلك الصفاء اللغوي في الكتابة والحديث العام، كما تجده عند محمد العلي. لقد تشرّب اللغة بعمق وبرح موسوعية حين ذهب لتلقّي العلوم الشرعية واللغوية في مدينة النجف التاريخية، وهناك اختلط بمراجع دينية ولغوية عراقية وعربية أخرى، وبلغ رتبة الشيخ المعمّم التي كادت أن تفضي به إلى أحد خطباء الحسينيات المفوّهين، لكن أحداثاً وقعت في مرحلته العراقية لتلقي به في أتون الحداثة والفكر التنويري وليحمل تجربته الشعرية المتمردة إلى السعودية ليصنع منها مشعلاً يؤسّس لأدب جديد يخرج من عباءة الوصاية ويسائل المسلّمات الأدبية وينطلق صانعاً أرضاً جديدة نبتت فوقها زهور وشجيرات لا حصر لها.

لا يمكن لأحد أن ينجو من سحر حديث محمد العلي، وتعليقاته المحبّة أو الساخرة أحياناً، بل إن ملاحظاته الناقدة لقصائدنا مطلع الثمانينيات كانت سنداً داعماً ومحرّضاً على القراءة النوعية والتجديد، وتمزيق النصوص التي تظهر مراهقة أدبية أو جمالية.

في غياب العلي نفقد عقلاً لامعاً، وشاعراً فريداً، ورائياً كبيراً عرف طريق الضوء وسط الغيوم الداكنة.

No matter how hard we try to condense Muhammad Al-Ali into a form or an image, we cannot do so.

He is a summary of the spirit of new writing in the Kingdom, its atmosphere, its questions, and its collision with the pillars of conservative writing. I do not say classical, for he was one of the nobles celebrating the ancient cultural heritage, in language, poetry, prose, and history.

He always seemed to me to be grasping the signs of renewal, but without letting go of the rich past. He always moved with two wings, and those who knew him closely remember the signs of astonishment that filled his companions when the jewels of poems, stories, proverbs, and sayings emerged from the folds of his oral discourse in side meetings or during enjoyable evenings, making him a being that manifests and carries us through his imaginations and vocabulary to other heavens.

The modern leadership of Muhammad Al-Ali stemmed from this juncture, and I mean the intersection of the classical dimension in his writing with the renewing spirit, surrounded by an enlightening vision of life, society, culture, and art. Therefore, we do not read his literary texts in isolation from his ideas and comments, which were included in his continuous journalistic contributions that began in Al-Yaum newspaper for decades, then in Al-Middle East, Al-Sharq, Okaz, and in Al-Yamama magazine in his later years, which he remained committed to until the month before his death.

It is rare to find such linguistic clarity in writing and public speaking as you find in Muhammad Al-Ali. He deeply absorbed the language and had an encyclopedic breadth when he went to study religious and linguistic sciences in the historic city of Najaf, where he mingled with Iraqi and Arab religious and linguistic references, and reached the rank of the turbaned Sheikh, which almost led him to become one of the eloquent speakers in the Hussainiyyas. However, events that occurred during his Iraqi phase threw him into the furnace of modernity and enlightened thought, carrying his rebellious poetic experience to Saudi Arabia to create a torch that establishes a new literature emerging from the cloak of guardianship, questioning literary certainties, and launching to create a new ground where countless flowers and shrubs have sprouted.

No one can escape the charm of Muhammad Al-Ali’s speech, his loving or sometimes sarcastic comments. In fact, his critical observations of our poems in the early eighties were a supportive and provocative foundation for qualitative reading and renewal, tearing apart texts that displayed literary or aesthetic immaturity.

In the absence of Al-Ali, we lose a brilliant mind, a unique poet, and a great visionary who knew the way to light amidst the dark clouds.
