Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi addressed her father with words that conveyed a daughter’s love and pride in his legacy, as the ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, appeared moved while listening to her in front of hundreds of attendees at the opening of the 45th Sharjah International Book Fair.

The Chairwoman of the Sharjah Book Authority reminisced about a lifetime she witnessed from the closest vantage point, speaking of her father as she knew him at home, among books, and during long hours of work. She addressed him, saying, “I have spent my life observing this journey from the front rows,” and from those rows, she recounted the story of ideas that witnessed their birth before becoming universities, institutions, and projects that benefit people.

Bodour returned to her childhood when books were present on tables, shelves, and in the discussions and stories her father told about history, people, and places. She absorbed his precision in details and his commitment to knowledge, then grew up to understand that behind what she heard and saw were hours of reading, research, and document review.

She stated that she saw many of Sharjah’s achievements before they became a reality, witnessing her father’s persistent pursuit of ideas and his dedication of time and effort until they were completed. As she took on some responsibility, she became more aware of the magnitude of what she had observed over the years and more appreciative of the patience required for every step.

From her memory, she recalled an image of her father in the early days of the university city when some of its projects were still open land; he would sit under a small canopy in the heat of the sun, drawing in the sand what he wanted to see in the future. This image remained with her, and then she saw what his hand had sketched become buildings frequented by students, classrooms for learning and research, and universities that extended to Sharjah’s cities and regions.

In her discussion about the book fair, she recalled the early days when the number of publishers was limited, and the turnout was different from what it is today. Her father would buy the available books to support the publishers and encourage them to return the following year. Bodour saw in that stance his early belief in what the fair could become and his commitment to nurturing its beginnings year after year.

Today, she sees the fruit of that patience in generations that grew up with the fair; children who attended its first editions returned as young adults and then as parents bringing their children among the books. The book has found a place in family memories, and the fair has become an event that generations inherit love for, while the cultures of the world meet in Sharjah.

She spoke proudly of her father’s relationship with history, his return to original documents, his digging in the archives, and his review of established narratives; believing in a person’s right to know their history as it happened. She recalled journeys she accompanied him on outside Sharjah, witnessing how books, theater, history, and art create a language for understanding and rapprochement among peoples.

The home remained present in this vast project; just as Bodour learned about books in her family home, her father wanted to reach people’s homes, so the library reached every Emirati family in Sharjah, making book ownership and reading closer to the details of daily life.

In concluding her speech, she expressed her gratitude as a daughter who knows how much he has given, taking pride in the impact of his contributions on people’s lives; she thanked him for his patience, for the faith he instilled in his family, and for what he built with love and sincerity for generations to live and continue working with.

Sultan listened, moved, as she said, “Today, when I see generations reading, generations writing, and generations publishing, I know that your story has become the story of generations… and the story of a nation.”

She then concluded her speech with the phrase that connected the family’s story with the emirate’s journey: “Thank you for making the book a part of our home and for making Sharjah a home for books.”
