The Economic Criminal Court ruled today, Sunday, to imprison the former business manager of artist Haifa Wehbe, Mohamed Waziry, for three years and fined him 19 million pounds, along with the confiscation of all assets obtained from the crime and the continued seizure of his funds, after he was convicted in a money laundering case linked to the embezzlement of large sums from the artist’s account.
The ruling came after a series of sessions in which the court reopened the floor for pleadings, and tasked the public prosecution with implementing its decisions. It also fined the head of the criminal department at the 6th of October Prosecution for failing to execute a previous order, and ordered the defendant to appear personally in the next session.
The case dates back to a complaint filed by Haifa Wehbe accusing Waziry of embezzling her funds through bank transfers to his personal account, exploiting the official power of attorney granted to him. These incidents were previously recorded and ended with an initial ruling sentencing the defendant to three years in prison for the charges of misappropriation and fraud, before the ruling was modified on appeal to two years for misappropriation and his acquittal from fraud.
During the appeal proceedings, the court referred the case to experts from the Ministry of Justice to assess the defendant’s assets and determine the amount of money obtained unlawfully, especially after he acknowledged collecting the artist’s dues from producers, channels, and event organizers.
The Economic Prosecution began its investigations into the money laundering suspicion by examining the sources of the wealth that had been identified, before deciding to refer the defendant to trial before the Economic Court to rule on the charges according to the law, culminating in the ruling issued today.
